چکیده

Sixty heat flow values ranging from 38 to 157 mW/m have been estimated for Armenia from geothermal gradient determinations in 90 locations and a limited number of thermal conductivity determinations. The highest values of heat flow (90-157 mW/m) occur in the central part of the country, which is characterized by vigorous Quaternary volcanic activity, manifestations of thermal springs, intensive aeromagnetic anomalies, and minimal negative values of Bouguer anomalies. To the northeast and southeast from this region, heat flow goes down to background values which is estimated to be 45-55 mW/m. It is found that a substantial part of the heat flow anomaly is caused by local shallowdepth heat sources, which must be cooling magmatic chambers related to recent volcanic activity. Based on magnetic investigations, depths, sizes, and current temperatures of magmatic chambers are estimated. An aeromagnetic data analysis shows that Curie point depth in Armenian territory varies from 5 (in volcanic region) to 12-13 km. Reservoir temperatures of mineral waters, estimated by silica geothermometry, generally range from 40C to 160C. The Eastern volcanic belt is thought to be the main area of geothermal potential in Armenia where both dry and hydrothermal resources are expected. The zones of deep faults almost everywhere in Armenian territory are promising for hydrothermal resources.

Cultivation and characterization of thermophilic Nitrospira species from geothermal springs in the US Great Basin, China, and Armenia.

Despite its importance in the nitrogen cycle, little is known about nitrite oxidation at high temperatures. To bridge this gap, enrichment cultures were inoculated with sediment slurries from a variety of geothermal springs. While nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) were successfully enriched from seven hot springs located in US Great Basin, south-western China, and Armenia at ≤ 57.9 °C, all attem...

Epidemiology of fractures in Armenia: development of a country-specific FRAX model and comparison to its surrogate

Fracture probabilities derived from the surrogate FRAX model for Armenia were compared to those from the model based on regional estimates of the incidence of hip fracture. Disparities between the surrogate and authentic FRAX models indicate the importance of developing country-specific FRAX models. Despite large differences between models, differences in the rank order of fracture probabilitie...

Nymphaea alba (Nymphaeaceae) in Armenia

In Armenia, Nymphaea alba only occurs in a small area NW of Stepanavan. It is restricted to small lakes with a minimum depth of c. 2–3 m because in shallower lakes it may be out-competed by Typha or Schoenoplectus species.
